A festive and easy-to-assemble charcuterie board arranged in a stars-and-stripes pattern, perfect for 4th of July celebrations and summer gatherings.

Ingredients

  • Large wooden or slate serving board (around 18×12 inches)
  • Parchment paper or doilies (optional)
  • Strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • Red grapes, halved
  • Red bell pepper strips
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Fresh mozzarella balls (bocconcini)
  • Sharp white cheddar, sliced
  • Creamy brie (optional, whole or sliced)
  • Cauliflower florets
  • Marcona almonds or salted cashews
  • Honey or fig jam
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Blackberries (optional)
  • Blue corn tortilla chips or crackers
  • Thinly sliced prosciutto or Serrano ham
  • Salami rounds
  • Spicy chorizo slices (optional)
  • Olives (green or black, pitted)
  • Fresh herbs (rosemary or thyme)
  • Crackers and breadsticks (neutral or lightly flavored)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients (15 minutes): Wash and dry all fresh produce thoroughly. Hull and slice strawberries; halve grapes and cherry tomatoes. Slice cheeses into bite-sized piecesโ€”sharp cheddar into thin slices, mozzarella left as whole bocconcini, and brie cut into wedges. Arrange meats in thin slices or folded ribbons for easy grabbing. Place nuts and olives in small bowls.
  2. Lay the Base (5 minutes): Place your serving board on a flat surface. If you like, add parchment paper or doilies to protect and add texture. Start by arranging the white elements in a long stripeโ€”use cauliflower florets, mozzarella balls, and white cheese slices for this. This will form the middle stripe of your stars and stripes.
  3. Create the Red Stripes (10 minutes): On either side of the white stripe, place the red ingredients in neat rows. Use sliced strawberries and red grapes on one side, and cherry tomatoes and red bell pepper strips on the other. Keep the rows tidy but natural-looking.
  4. Form the Blue Star Section (10 minutes): In one corner of the board, arrange blueberries in a roughly square shape to mimic the ‘blue field’ of the flag. Sprinkle a few blackberries for color variation. Optionally, use small star-shaped cookie cutters to cut white cheddar stars to scatter among the blueberries.
  5. Add Meats and Crackers (10 minutes): Fill empty spaces with folded meats and crackers. Place meats near the cheese stripes for easy pairing. Scatter nuts and olives in remaining gaps. Garnish lightly with sprigs of fresh rosemary or thyme.
  6. Final Touches (5 minutes): Add small bowls of honey or fig jam near the cheese. Adjust rows or clusters to keep the pattern clear and visually appealing. Avoid overfilling.

Notes

Take cheeses out 30 minutes before serving to enhance flavor. Wash and dry berries thoroughly to avoid sogginess. Use sharp knives for clean cuts. Buy extra fruit for gatherings. Personalize with balsamic glaze or mini caprese skewers. For gluten-free, use almond flour crackers. For vegan, replace cheeses with plant-based alternatives and use vegan meats or extra nuts and fruits. Store leftovers in airtight containers; consume fresh fruit within 24 hours.
