A simple, juicy hot dog recipe perfect for summer picnics, featuring all-beef hot dogs with a homemade tangy sauce and fresh toppings. Ready in under 20 minutes, ideal for casual backyard gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 all-beef hot dogs (Nathan’s Famous recommended)
  • 8 soft brioche or potato buns, toasted
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • Dill pickle slices or spears
  • 1 medium ripe tomato, diced
  • 1/4 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • A handful of chopped parsley or chives (optional)

Instructions

  1. Finely chop the onion and dice the tomato. Set aside the pickle slices.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, chili powder, salt, and pepper to create a tangy, creamy sauce. Taste and adjust seasoning. (5 minutes)
  3. Spread softened butter evenly on each bun’s cut side. Place them on the grill or a hot skillet, buttered side down, and toast until golden brown and slightly crisp—about 2 minutes. Watch closely to avoid burning. (3 minutes)
  4. Place the hot dogs on the grill over medium heat. Turn every 2-3 minutes until evenly charred and heated through, about 8-10 minutes total. Avoid poking holes to keep juices inside. (10 minutes)
  5. Place each grilled hot dog in a toasted bun. Spoon a generous amount of homemade sauce on top. Add chopped onions, diced tomatoes, and pickle slices. Finish with fresh herbs if desired. (5 minutes)
  6. Serve immediately while warm and juicy. Pair with favorite sides and cold drinks.

Notes

Do not prick hot dogs to keep them juicy. Toast buns with butter to prevent sogginess. Sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Keep hot dogs warm wrapped in foil in a low oven if needed. For gluten-free, swap buns for gluten-free options or lettuce wraps. For vegetarian, use plant-based hot dogs and vegan mayo.
