This slow cooker spiced hot chocolate is rich, creamy, and infused with warm spices. It’s the perfect winter drink for holiday parties, snow days, or cozy nights in.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cacao), roughly chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Mini marshmallows (for serving, optional)
  • Whipped cream (for serving, optional)
  • Cinnamon sticks (for serving, optional)
  • Chocolate shavings (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep your slow cooker. Give the inside a quick spray with non-stick cooking spray or a light wipe of butter.
  2. Add the liquid base. Pour the whole milk, heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk into the slow cooker. Whisk gently to combine.
  3. Add the chocolate. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips and chopped dark chocolate over the liquid. Let the chocolate sit on top for about 5 minutes to start softening.
  4. Add the spices. In a small bowl, combine the ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cayenne (if using), and sea salt. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the chocolate. Add the vanilla extract.
  5. Whisk everything together for about 30 seconds until the chocolate begins to melt and the spices are distributed.
  6. Cover the slow cooker and set it to LOW. Cook for 2 hours.
  7. After 1 hour, give the mixture a good whisk to incorporate everything smoothly and prevent a skin from forming.
  8. After 2 hours, whisk one more time. The hot chocolate should be smooth, glossy, and deeply fragrant. Ladle into mugs and top with your favorite garnishes.

Notes

Don’t rush the heat—cook on LOW for 2 hours for the best texture. Whisk at the halfway point to prevent a skin from forming. Taste and adjust spices after 1 hour. For parties, keep warm on the WARM setting for up to 4 hours, stirring every 30 minutes.
