A quick and easy Halloween appetizer featuring a wheel of brie wrapped in puff pastry strips to look like a mummy, topped with fig jam and baked until golden and oozy. Perfect for last-minute party prep.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 (8-ounce) wheel of brie cheese
  • 1/4 cup fig jam
  • Candy eyeballs (optional, for decoration)
  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, gently roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet into a roughly 10×10-inch square. Cut the pastry into 1-inch wide strips (about 8 to 10 strips).
  3. Place the brie wheel in the center of the parchment-lined baking sheet. Score the top of the brie in a crosshatch pattern, about 1/4-inch deep.
  4. Spoon the fig jam over the top of the brie, spreading it evenly, leaving about a 1/2-inch border of bare brie.
  5. Take one strip of puff pastry and lay it across the center of the brie, pressing the ends down onto the baking sheet. Take another strip and lay it perpendicular to the first, crossing over the center. Continue wrapping the brie with the remaining strips, overlapping them slightly and rotating the brie as you go, until the entire wheel is covered. Leave some gaps so you can see the brie and jam peeking through. Tuck the ends of the strips underneath the brie.
  6. In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water until well combined. Using a pastry brush, gently brush the egg wash over all the exposed pastry strips. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt if using.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown and the brie is soft and oozy. If the edges of the pastry are browning too quickly, tent loosely with foil for the last 5 minutes.
  8. Let the baked brie cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes. Using a spatula, carefully transfer the mummy brie to a serving platter. While the pastry is still warm, press the candy eyeballs gently into the pastry at one end to create the mummy’s face. Serve immediately with crackers, sliced baguette, apple slices, or pretzels.

Notes

Don’t over-thaw the puff pastry; keep it cold. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter for clean cuts. Don’t over-wrap the brieโ€”leave gaps for steam to escape. Let the baked brie rest for 5 minutes before serving to avoid burning your mouth. Can be assembled up to 24 hours ahead (without egg wash) and refrigerated.
