  • 2 cups whole milk (or unsweetened almond milk for lighter option)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup diced cooked bacon or sausage (optional)
  • ½ cup chopped green onions or chives (optional)
  • 1 cup fresh spinach, roughly chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Cube day-old bread into roughly 1-inch pieces and place evenly in the greased baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and dry mustard powder until smooth and slightly frothy.
  4. Stir in shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses along with any optional cooked bacon, green onions, or spinach.
  5. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down lightly to ensure custard soaks in well.
  6. Let the casserole sit for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  7. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use day-old bread to avoid sogginess. Let the casserole soak for at least 10 minutes before baking for perfect texture. Grease the baking dish well to prevent sticking.
