Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 68 soft hamburger buns (brioche or classic white)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting buns)
  • 68 slices cheddar cheese (sharp or mild)
  • Swiss cheese (optional)
  • American cheese (optional)
  • Lettuce leaves (iceberg or romaine)
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Thinly sliced red onion rings
  • Sliced pickles (dill or bread & butter)
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • Mayonnaise
  • Special burger sauce (mix 1/4 cup mayo, 2 tablespoons ketchup, 1 teaspoon pickle juice, 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika)
  • Optional extras: bacon strips (cooked crisp), avocado slices, jalapeño slices, caramelized onions

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and divide into 6 equal portions. Shape into round patties about 3/4 inch thick and press a slight indentation in the center of each.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Spread softened butter on the cut sides of the buns and toast until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Set aside warm.
  3. Heat skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Cook patties for about 4 minutes on the first side without moving. Flip, add cheese slices, and cook another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness or until internal temperature reaches 160°F.
  4. While patties cook, slice tomatoes, onions, and pickles. Arrange lettuce leaves. Mix burger sauce by combining mayo, ketchup, pickle juice, and smoked paprika.
  5. Set up the burger bar by laying out buns, patties, toppings, sauces, and optional extras in separate bowls or plates for self-assembly.
  6. Encourage everyone to build their own burgers and enjoy immediately.

Notes

Do not overmix the meat to keep patties tender. Press a thumbprint in the center of patties to prevent puffing. Rest patties for 5 minutes after cooking to lock in juices. Toast buns with butter for best flavor and texture. Prepare toppings in advance to save time. For dairy-free or vegan options, use plant-based patties and vegan cheese and buns.
