This tangy cranberry orange sauce with fresh ginger is the perfect balance of tart and sweet, with a warm ginger kick. It comes together in just 20 minutes and is a crowd-pleaser for any holiday table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon (about 15 g) fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients: Wash cranberries, pick out any soft or discolored ones. Zest the orange before juicing. Grate the ginger. Measure out sugar and water.
  2. Combine everything in a medium saucepan: cranberries, sugar, orange juice, orange zest, grated ginger, and water. Stir briefly.
  3. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until bubbles break the surface all over (about 3-4 minutes).
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer gently for 10-12 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes. Cranberries will pop and sauce will thicken.
  5. Check for doneness: drag a spoon through the sauce; it should leave a trail that doesn’t immediately fill back in. Sauce should coat the spoon but still be pourable.
  6. Remove from heat and let cool for at least 30 minutes. Sauce will thicken further as it cools.
  7. Transfer to a storage container. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Notes

This sauce is even better the next day as flavors meld. For a spiced version, add a cinnamon stick, star anise, or cloves while simmering. For a boozy version, replace water with bourbon or brandy after removing from heat. Can be frozen for up to 3 months.
